At first glance, the pygmy hippopotamus may resemble a young common hippo, but in reality it is a separate species – an adult male is about half the size and has noticeably narrower nostrils. Unlike the common hippo, it does not spend as much time in water and is active mainly at night. Unfortunately, it is among endangered species, especially due to poaching and logging in its native habitat.
