Any number of players can participate in the game, but there must be at least three. All cards are dealt evenly among the participating players so that it is not visible who received the Black Peter card. Players immediately remove matching pairs from the game and place them visibly to the side of the playing mat or table. They spread their remaining cards into a fan in their hands. The player to the left of the dealer draws a card from the dealer; if this completes a pair, they place the pair aside and then offer a card from their hand to the next player in the circle. Players continue in this way, removing pairs of cards. The player left holding the last Black Peter card loses.
